House Attack on Teachers Thwarted in Final Version of Evaluation Bill

Statement by Melissa Cropper, Ohio Federation of Teachers President:

"We are pleased that the final version of the teacher evaluation law approved by the legislature today excluded a list of drastic measures piled on by the House in recent weeks as yet another attack on Ohio educators.

"While that attack was averted, the law only slightly eradicated problems associated with too heavily relying on unreliable student growth measure data to evaluate the skill and performance of a teacher. The Senate rightly passed a bill dropping that weight to 35 percent of the evaluation in light of serious problems in other states; politics pushed it up to 42.5 percent in the final version of the law approved today."
