Kaleidoscope Workers Win Union Through Voluntary Recognition

Earlier this week, the Kaleidoscope Youth Center agreed to voluntarily recognize the union that was formed by employees, Kaleidoscope Workers Union. The union, formed with unanimous support from union-eligible employees, was publicly announced on Monday, January 29.

The Kaleidoscope Workers Union Organizing Committee released the following statement:

"On behalf of all the workers at Kaleidoscope Youth Center, the organizing committee is expressing our deepest gratitude to the Board of Directors for voting in favor of voluntarily recognizing the Kaleidoscope Workers Union. This decision represents a significant milestone in our collective journey toward fostering a more inclusive and equitable workplace. By recognizing the union, Kaleidoscope Youth Center leadership has demonstrated a commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of all workers and a dedication to serving the LGBTQIA+ youth in our community.

At Kaleidoscope Youth Center, we understand the critical importance of creating environments where everyone feels affirmed and respected as their authentic selves. The Board of Directors have taken a vital step in ensuring that our workplace reflects the values of inclusivity, diversity, and justice that we strive to instill in the broader community. We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead as we work collaboratively with the Board, management, and fellow workers to address issues, improve working conditions, and ultimately enhance our ability to serve the needs of LGBTQIA+ youth. Thank you to the Board of Directors once again for your decision to recognize the Kaleidoscope Workers Union. Together, we can continue to positively impact the lives of the youth we serve and create a more just and equitable organization.

OFT President Melissa Cropper released the following statement:

"We're thrilled to help support Kaleidoscope Youth Center staff as they form their union. KYC is such an important organization for Ohio's LGBTQ+ youth, especially at a time when some state legislators are targeting their community with laws that would threaten their health, codify state-sanctioned discrimination, and erase their identities.

By forming their union, KYC staff are taking steps to have a voice and an active role in strengthening their organization so that they can better serve their community. We are appreciative that the Board of Directors respected the decision their employees made and are ready to collaborate on a fair union contract."
